Chickens get a reinforced yard…

Mystery chicken predator, broken eggs, dead hens…

Chicken Yard Enclosure
Chicken Yard Enclosure

The last weeks of June and early weeks of July were not a good period for our chicken flock. Each evening, as we went out to collect eggs, they were all broken in the nests. This started happening every day! I decided to start collecting the eggs earlier in the day, around noon and then again in the evening to see if it would make any difference. It didn’t.

Night Blooming Cereus

We love plants and flowers here at The Cove, and one of our favorites is our ‘Night Blooming Cereus’. Epiphyllum oxypetalum (Dutchman’s pipe cactus or queen of the night) is a species of cactus and one of the most cultivated species in the genus. E. oxypetalum blooms rarely and only at night, and its flowers wilt before dawn.

First cold weather arrives…

Today we woke up to our first ‘cold’ weather of the year…finally! It has been a bit on the warm side throughout October, often close to setting new records and hopefully that has changed. Time to split some wood and fire up the wood stove tonight as the low will be 43°. A sip of Bulleit Bourbon and hot Minorcan Clam Chowder is on the menu…

Firewood for Winter…

Fresh cut oak thanks to Hurricane Irma…

After Hurricane Irma came through last month, numerous trees were downed throughout the area. I drove my truck around the neighborhoods and countryside and collected as much as I could handle…three truck loads of oak. This wood will need to sit for a year and season before burning in the wood stove.
